Lunar Watch

28F|12 partially silvered crystal spheres paint (black), stainless steel 137cm x137cm 2016

Described by the artist as “devices for the experience of reality,” Olafur Eliasson's works prompt a greater sense of awareness about the way we engage with and interpret the world. This internationally acclaimed artist specializes in applying the natural environmental elements such as sunlight, flowing streams, rainbow and mist with scientific approach as well as child-like wonder to create dreamy but vivid scenes. Viewers are invited to walk through the scenes to evoke their five senses.

In this work, a ring of twelve glass spheres is mounted on a wall. The amount of coating applied to each sphere increases incrementally from completely uncoated to completely coated to demonstrate the lunar circle (from full moon to new moon), such that the ring of spheres progresses from a clear sphere situated at the top of the ring to a black sphere at the bottom, and back again.

The amount of coating affects each sphere’s appearance: those with a small circle on the back shift between being transparent or reflective depending on the angle of view, while the more coated spheres present an enclosed space that invites the viewer to look inside.
