Small Like Mount Tai

Room 2601|Paper‭ ‬and aluminum on‭ ‬canvas 35x25.5cm 2017

Zhuang Pu uses square seal prints as the basic units in his artwork. With cubistic or geometric hard-edge composition, he presents movement and self-discipline of concepts. Seal prints are placed in predefined spots to record his deepest and most intense internal activities in the simplest form. Limited language tells romantic tales. He doesn’t draw or paint to create an image. Instead, he applies an approach similar to “rubbing, reflection and echo” and repeatedly uses 1 cm by 1 cm seals to stamp out colorful contents. Black and white colors are the basic tones in his innovative seal print series. Diagonal lines are cut in the squares to suggest folds and create a three-dimensional sense of space on the 2D work. Objects readily available are utilized. Rusted worn-out aluminum strips are also used in this work.
